Sophisticated Deception Leads to Major Theft
Dubai Police have reported the apprehension of an eight-member gang, including one woman, implicated in the theft of luxury oud worth AED 12 million from a merchant. The operation led to the arrest of four individuals and the recovery of the high-value oud within 12 hours of the crime being reported. International Red Notices have been issued for the remaining four suspects, one of whom is alleged to have impersonated a princess during the elaborate scheme.
The incident unfolded when two members of the gang approached a luxury oud retailer, informing the merchant that a prominent princess was expected in Dubai and intended to make a substantial purchase of premium oud. Convinced by the fabricated story, the trader prepared a selection of his finest products and arranged a meeting with the supposed royal.
Elaborate Setup and Execution
To execute their plan, the syndicate rented a modern villa, enlisted security personnel, and orchestrated a high-end reception and dinner. These arrangements were designed to create the convincing impression of a legitimate royal visit. During the meeting, the merchant presented the oud he had brought in his personal bags. The gang then requested that he transfer the items into different bags, asserting these were more appropriate for the princess.
The alleged princess subsequently arrived, met the trader, and indicated her intention to proceed with the purchase. Following her departure, the gang instructed the merchant to wait while the oud was purportedly returned to his original bags, promising to contact him the next day to finalize the transaction. However, they swapped the luxury oud with ordinary wood before handing the bags back to him.
Rapid Police Response and Recovery
Upon attempting to contact the individuals the following day, the trader discovered their phones were switched off. Opening the bags, he realized the theft had occurred. A report was immediately filed with the Command and Control Centre, prompting the General Department of Criminal Investigation to form a specialized task force.
Utilizing advanced technologies and surveillance systems, the task force launched an investigation. Within half a day, officers successfully apprehended four suspects and located the stolen oud in an apartment, preventing its potential disposal. Dubai Police later identified the remaining suspects, confirming they had departed the country shortly after the crime. Red Notices have since been issued to facilitate their arrest and extradition.
